Coronavirus (COVID-19)

UPDATE: 17th March 2020 (3pm)

MMF Coronavirus (COVID-19) Statement

Dear Parents & Guardians,

In view of developments with the Coronavirus outbreak and following the update to government guidance on 16th March, regrettably we have made the decision to cancel all forthcoming MMF Instrumental lessons both in schools and at our Morden-based Music Centres as of the end of the day today (Tuesday 17th March) up until the Easter break. Furthermore, all Music Centre ensemble rehearsals and forthcoming concerts/events this term will be cancelled. This was a difficult decision to make but ultimately, we must ensure the health and wellbeing of our pupils, staff and the wider community.

It is unclear what the situation will be in Summer term regarding school closures. MMF leadership has begun the process of implementing a video-learning platform to enable us to facilitate e-learning. In the event of mass isolation, continuing instrumental tuition via internet-based platforms will be a vital means by which your child continues their academic, social and musical development. We will be in touch shortly with more details as to how this system will work and what safeguarding measures we will be implementing.

The Music Centre events to be cancelled are: String Showcase, Hideaway Jazz Night, SongSquad, Stringanza, Hands On Workshop and the Spotlight Soloists Concerts. At present, it is our hope not to cancel events scheduled for after the Easter break, however we will have to review this as the situation develops. Please note that ABRSM have postponed all instrumental exams until further notice, see their website for further info.

For parents of children who have booked for our summer tour to Paris, we appreciate that you will have concerns regarding the trip. We are currently in talks with our tour operator and we are awaiting more detailed guidance from the government. We would appreciate your patience to enable us time to get the full picture, and rest assured that we will be in touch with further details as soon as we are able to.

Merton Music Foundation is a small independent charity and the majority of MMF tutors work as freelance musicians on a self-employed basis across multiple organisations and as such they are facing a complete loss of income as all teaching and performing work is all being cancelled with no notice. To support our tutor team, we have made the decision to honour their pay for lessons missed as a result of COVID-19 for Spring term.

Please note the latest government guidance regarding COVID-19, which was updated yesterday:

We ask parents and guardians to bear with us during this time of uncertainty and to maintain a calm sense of perspective as we all tackle this crisis together. Please be assured that MMF staff and leadership team are working tirelessly to continue to deliver the highest levels of consistency and quality in provision whilst ensuring the health and well-being of our community.

If you have any specific concerns you would like to discuss with us, please contact our admin team who will be happy to direct you to the appropriate member of our staff: / 020 8640 5446

We thank you for your understanding during this uncertain time.

Yours sincerely,

Elisabeth Wigley
