Good news! Responding to the current social distancing measures, our Music Centre is now online for the summer term.
New members are welcome and instruments/experience not required for every group.
We will return to face-to-face provision as soon as it is safe and possible for us to do so. MMF ensembles will look (and sound!) very different next year as we all grapple with the impact of this terrible virus. We will let you know more as soon as we are able, but for the time being are planning online activities for September 2020 to ensure that your young musician can keep making music whatever happens with COVID-19.
If your child doesn’t already learn an instrument (or doesn’t have access to an instrument at home) we would suggest:
Merton Young Voices choir / Sat 9am
Beginner Recorder / Wed 5pm (recorder required but they’re easily available online for under £10)
Select your child’s group from the timetable below to access the Zoom meeting link. We have emailed you the password(s) for your session(s).

These sessions will introduce tips and advice for performers at all ability levels on how to prepare and present performances that are enjoyable for you and communicate effectively to your audience. Students will have the opportunity to play for each other while gaining experience and positive feedback on expression, performance etiquette and stage presence. We will also watch and discuss a selection of video performances by world class performers and explore topics including preparing for the ‘Big Day’ and beating ‘stage- fright’. Once a student has played their piece in the performance class they will be able to sign up for one of the MMF’s Online Spotlight Concerts.

All guitar groups are invited to play at the Royal Albert Hall in a massed guitar ensemble, last year they performed Pirates of the Caribbean. Members of this group also have the opportunity to go on tour. Last year they took part in the Belgium tour and this year the destination is Paris.
This project will culminate in an online video performance of a composition for ‘kitchen’ percussion specially created by Jeremy Barnett. Each participant will be given their own part to learn at home. They will then need to video themselves playing their part along with a click track and submit that to MMF. These videos will be compiled to create the final performance. This special E- ensemble is suitable for all percussionists who can read music at Grade 1 level upwards.
Resources provided will include:
- Parts and click tracks (MP3s) available for download.
- Online lessons to assist in learning your part.
- Videos of each part being performed.

This class is specially for Grade 3 + pianists who have thought about joining a jazz group but don’t know how to start when it comes to reading a jazz piano chart. We’ll learn how to read chord symbols, explore the role of a pianist in a jazz group, improvise accompaniments behind soloists, have a go at soloing, and listen to lots of great music.

This is a chance for players who have already done a bit of improvising and perhaps played in a jazz group before to learn more about the music and develop their understanding and confidence improvising on common jazz structures. We’ll listen to some great music and learn about some of the most influential jazz musicians, how to read chord symbols and how to approach improvising on them. We’ll explore other common ingredients such as modes, and discuss how improvisers practice to become comfortable using them. By the end of term we should all feel a lot more confident when we see a solo section rushing towards us on a MYJO chart!
