Music Centre Update

UPDATE: 16/10/2020

We are thrilled to announce that, after a great deal of hard work behind-the-scenes, MMF plans to resume a restricted number of Music Centre ensemble rehearsals after half-term.

Starting on Wednesday evenings from 11th November for a 5 week trial period, we will welcome back members of:

Merton Youth Concert Band, MYJOMerton Mallets, Online Drumline, StringBusters, Combo Strings (Intermediate Strings & String Sinfonia) and Junior, Intermediate and Senior Guitar Ensembles.

All of our E-Groups, including those listed above, will also continue to run online for the remainder of the Autumn Term (until December) with the exception of MYCB and DrumLine* which will be in-person only from November. We hope our other ensembles will be able to start rehearsing together again in the Spring Term (January) including returning to our usual Saturday morning sessions, government guidelines permitting. We will review our In-Person and E-Music Centre offer ahead of January 2021.

If your child attends one of the groups above and would like to participate in our in-person trials, please contact: Louisa Wansborough

*Subject to level of sign-up

New Venue

Another exciting piece of news is that we have secured a new venue in a central part of the borough for these Music Centre activities.

Merton Abbey Primary School is conveniently located between South Wimbledon tube station and the Tandem Centre and we’re very much looking forward to building this partnership further in the future.

MYCB will meet weekly in 3 distinct ‘bubbles’ and work as small chamber-sized ensembles.

MYJO pupils may need to be split into two bubbles rehearsing in the same large hall space with separation.

Due to COVID restrictions, pupils can only attend one in-person group with exceptions for DrumLine, Merton Mallets, MYCB and MYJO, where pupil 'bubbles' can be maintained.

Where is the new Music Centre?

Merton Abbey Primary School, High Path, London SW19 2JY.

This lovely new venue is right next door to the new Harris Academy Wimbledon site and between South Wimbledon tube station (4-min walk) and the Tandem Centre (4-min drive).

Due to COVID restrictions, parents/guardians will not be permitted on site.

We kindly request that pupils are dropped-off outside of the school and make their own way in via the car park entrance to the playground - please look out for staff and signage to direct you.

There is very limited on-site parking for staff and pupils with access requirements, younger pupils or those carrying larger instruments. To request a space, please contact us.

Please note that the MMF main office will still be based at Harris Academy Morden.

Is It COVID-Safe?

We have implemented a comprehensive range of protocols including ventilation, distancing and hygiene measures to ensure the safety of our learning community. Pupils will also be kept in 'bubbles' of no more than 15 in accordance with Government guidelines; this will impact on capacity and rehearsal scheduling.

You will shortly be able to read our full Risk Assessment here.

Government guidelines make allowance for the gathering of persons from multiple households in a COVID-secure venue for the purposes of 'supervised activities provided for children, including... youth groups and activities..' at all tiers of the new COVID restrictions.

Please note:

No parents/guardians on site

Pupils and staff to wear a face covering at all times whilst on site except for when seated in their designated place for rehearsal

Strict 2 metre distancing to be observed at all times

Everyone must wash/sanitise their hands upon entry and regularly throughout the time on site

Do not attend if you or a member of your household is displaying COVID symptoms or has tested positive

Each pupil can only attend one group with exceptions for some pupils in DrumLine, Merton Mallets, MYCB and MYJO where pupil 'bubbles' can be maintained.

Please don't remain on site any longer than necessary

Please do not travel to Music Centre with people from outside your household

If you have any questions about our COVID procedures, please contact:

What Will My Child Need to Bring to Rehearsals?

A face covering, music stand, sheet music and pencil (plus their instrument!).

Brass and woodwind players should bring a towel for drips and valve emptying.

We also recommend carrying a personal supply of hand sanitiser and tissues.

Will 1-1 Lessons Resume In Person at Music Centre?

We will be resuming a small number of in-person 1-1 lessons at the new Merton Abbey venue. Capacity will be severely restricted. Priority will be given to existing online pupils and in order of application to our Waiting List.

We will update this page in the coming days with more information about 1-1 lessons at Music Centre.

Click here to enrol on our Waiting List.

When Will Other Music Centre Groups Resume In-Person?

We will continue to closely monitor guidelines from the government and Arts Council England with regards to to the safe delivery of band rehearsals for our Music Centre members.

We hope to to re-introduce Saturday morning groups in the Spring Term (from January 2021) but we appreciate your patience as we move forward.

How Can I Sign My Child Up to Music Centre Groups?

We are opening-up our In-Person Music Centre gradually, starting with a restricted number of ensembles. Spaces are very limited, so we will be contacting existing members of our E-Music Centre directly to invite them to submit an expression of interest.

However, in the meantime you can use this link to sign-up for our E-Music Centre.

Music Centre membership is £99 per 10-week term and your child can sign up to multiple groups, according to their instrument and ability. If you're unsure which groups are suitable please email
