Merton Young Voices
Young Voices is MMF’s junior choir for children aged 7-12 (years 3-7). It’s a fun group who sing a varied repertoire and many, but not all, members also learn an instrument and play in MMF ensembles or bands.
Being in the choir helps develop general musicianship skills and ensemble experience. Members learn how to control and expand their vocal pitch and dynamic range; to pitch-match (sing in-tune); the importance of good posture and clear diction; to sing in two or more parts; and to use their voices expressively, reflecting the style and context of a wide variety of songs.
General musicianship activities help to foster an understanding of pulse, rhythm, phrasing, musical structure, pitch and scales and develop their ‘thinking voices’. The choir performs at end-of-term concerts and at many other external venues and events ranging from the Mayor of Merton’s Christmas Concert to the Royal Albert Hall and the Tower of London.
The choir is run by Soo Bishop and they rehearse on Saturdays (9-10am) at St. John’s Church, next door to our South Wimbledon Music Centre.
